An experience. A feeling. The essence of luxury.
In the early 18th century Emmanuel Courvoisier and his associate Louis Gallois redefined cognac. The next generation, Felix Courvoisier and Jules Gallois took Courvoisier® to a whole new level and turned it into the luxury experience it is today. This came about when they moved their headquarters from Paris to the heart of the Cognac region, Jarnac, where they perfected the Courvoisier® cognac.
So what is cognac? A cognac is a form of brandy made from white grapes. In order for it to be classified as Cognac, it must be made in the Cognac region of France. Felix Courvoisier knew that the best cognac can only be produced from Colombard, Folle Blanche or Ugni Blanc grapes. As such, Courvoisier® mainly works with the finest four growing regions Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois.
The grapes are selected for their perfect combination of clay, chalk, lime and flint stones, rainfall and sunshine. They are harvested at their peak then pressed by the vine-growers, after which the juices are allowed to naturally ferment, transforming the grape sugars into wine.
The wine is then double distilled in a traditional process unique to cognac. Courvoisier® is one of the few cognac houses to distil “on the lees”, a specific technique that involves keeping the yeast residue.
The final product is separated into three parts: the head, the heart and the tails. Only the clear and pure liquid from the heart is used to craft Courvoisier®. This precious eau-de-vie is then aged in barrels handcrafted from oak trees directly selected by Courvoisier from specific forests.
Since the 18th century when Napoleon III gave Courvoisier® the title of Official Supplier to the Imperial Court, to winning multiple awards consistently in the 21st century, Felix Courvoisier’s legacy lives on as the innovative and sophisticated father of premium cognac.
